Flower Pot- Is Porn Bad?

Flower Pot- Petals of wisdom from Lotus Bloom's sex educators a column updated every other Wednesday of the month answers the questions we hear most often. Do you have a burning question to ask our sex educators? Email us at Lotusbloomsalexandria@gmail.com

Q: Is porn healthy? We hear so much about porn and how it leads to porn addiction, distorted body image, and unhealthy sexual relationships. How can porn be used in a healthy way?

A: Porn is one of the most argued about topics in sex conversations, second to the female orgasm. But just like the female orgasm, porn does exist and it can be healthy!

When talking about porn addiction, it's important to keep in mind that moderation is everything! You can become "addicted" to anything. Drinking a lot of coffee every day can lead to a caffeine addiction. The important thing is to moderate how often you're watching porn, and even try something new by changing the type of porn you are watching as often as possible!

When talking about distorted body image in porn it is important to keep in mind that demand for porn changes what is popular in porn. For instance as amateur porn becomes more available on the internet, natural body types, hairstyles, and even condom usage are in demand. We the consumers decide what is widely available by what we purchase and recommend.

When talking about unhealthy sexual relationships I find that porn can lead to both very healthy and very unhealthy relationship behaviors. Often, when people are talking about how porn negatively they are referring to a person who is hiding their porn watching habits from their partner. By keeping secrets, especially about sexual behaviors that affect your sexuality and sex drive, it can negatively affect a relationship with a sense of betrayal or feeling as though there is a lack of trust. It is very important to communicate with your partner. When people are open with their partners about their porn watching, that can lead to a frank and open conversation about their sex life and what they would like to try, which can lead to a healthier, more fulfilling sex life.

As for how porn can be used in a healthy way, to enhance sexual relationships, I have these tips

  1. Communicate with your partner. This is a big one. Make sure you are discussing your porn watching with your partner, explain why you enjoy it, and even invite them to watch with you. This can also help to increase intimacy.
  2. Don't forget your partner. Many people report that they feel intimidated by the actors in porn. So be sure to remind your partner often how much you appreciate them and their body without the photo manipulation that is so often used in mainstream porn.
  3. Many people use porn to explore sexual situations and scenarios they want to try, or would never try in real life. This can be a healthy expression of sexuality as people learn more about their sexual wants and needs. Asking your partner about their porn habits and whether they would enjoy trying those scenes in real life is a great way to engage with your partner and try new things! Be sure to communicate what you are and are not comfortable with trying.
  4. Remember that at the end of the day porn actors are just that- actors. They are paid to behave a certain way, and they don't all have never ending stamina. Porn isn't done in one take, and often uses a number of off-screen tools to assist the actors in their physical comfort, so don't be afraid to grab a toy, or use some lubricant! Flower Pot- Why Masturbation?

Flower Pot- Petals of wisdom from Lotus Bloom's sex educators a column updated every other Wednesday of the month answers the questions we hear most often. Do you have a burning question to ask our sex educators? Email us at Lotusbloomsalexandria@gmail.com

Masturbation has it's own holiday, an entire month – May. To celebrate, Lotus Blooms hosted a workshop, led by Domina Vontana, about the pleasures and benefits of self stimulation.

Q: Why is masturbation healthy? Why is it so taboo?

A: Masturbation first joined the mainstream health and wellness discourse in the 70's, with much of the credit going to the feminist community and the sexual revolution.

The most common lingering misconception about masturbation is that it is the last resort of a sexually frustrated person unable to connect successfully with another consenting adult or person of similar age (teens have sex too, and they masturbate, and maybe they read this column. If so I'll direct any minors to the woman who is equipped to answer your questions, here is her website, now please go away, this is for mature audiences only). Parents, Dr. Levkoff's site is good info for you too if you want to talk with your teens about sex.

The truth is, parents and those over 18, that masturbation is a really important part of your sex life for many reasons. The basics are health and pleasure. And you've heard it all before:
If you want to be comfortable around another person you first need to learn to be comfortable with who you are, or as I like to say it: being comfortable with your body is a gift you give your lover.
If you don't know what you want, no one else will, or as I like to say it: map your vagina. It's an amazing place. No one else can do this but you.

Don't be afraid to touch yourself, or as I like to say it: self exploration is self love and you deserve love and love is good for you. I also like this principle, because it redirects our attention to ourselves and our most basic needs and taps into the reality that there is a presence within us that is capable of great depths of resources.

Masturbation is healthy or as I like to say it: of course masturbation is healthy. Orgasms and other things like it are the only physically pleasurable experiences human beings are capable of that don't require any outside stimulation. The ones that do are eating, drinking, drugs and intercourse.
Masturbation is not dirty or as I like to say it: at six weeks, prior to gender or sex differentiation (or non differentiation) in the womb, every fetus has a tub and a glans. Glans are for pleasure. The tube will be the sex organs that can be used to connect to another human's glans, or your own hand, or a toy.

The essential elements for a successful masturbation experience are time and tools.Take a look at our website or come to the store to find out more information about the tools you can use to make your experience worthwhile.

Flower Pot- Why should I be looking at my toy materials?

Flower Pot- Petals of wisdom from Lotus Bloom's sex educators a column updated every other Wednesday of the month answers the questions we hear most often. Do you have a burning question to ask our sex educators? Email us at Lotusbloomsalexandria@gmail.com

Q: What are body safe toy materials and why are they so expensive? Is it worth it to purchase a higher priced toy because of the material?

A: There are a ton of toy materials on the market. They all react differently and do different things as well as give different sensations. There are some toy materials though that contain phthalates, a chemical that has been linked to endocrine disruption, hormone changes, birth defects, obesity, and allergies. We consider adult toys without phthalates to be "body safe"

Because sex toys are sold as novelties due to FDA regulations, many companies choose to use materials containing phthalates because it is more cost effective. Three of the known materials containing these chemicals are Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), Latex, and Jelly Rubber. As the toys age and are used, the materials break down and release the phthalates into your body.

As for the price tag, there are a number of body safe toys on the market that you can get for a reasonable cost. Many of the toys here at Lotus Blooms are affordable and body safe. We like it when you don't have to choose! Take a look at our website to view body safe products, and for more education on sex toy materials and types!

Flower Pot- Why should I "go green" for my lube?

Flower Pot- Petals of wisdom from Lotus Bloom's sex educators a column updated every other Wednesday of the month answers the questions we hear most often. Do you have a burning question to ask our sex educators? Email us at Lotusbloomsalexandria@gmail.com

Q: There are a lot of lubricants out on the market. What are the benefits of "going green" with my lube, especially when you look at the price tag?

A: Choosing a lubricant is a task that most people don't think about everyday. We think about what we eat, and drink, and put on our bodies, but lubricants often are forgotten. Many of your drug store lubricants are full of chemicals that are not 100% safe for your body. When you're looking for a good lubricant make sure to take a good look at the ingredient list before purchasing. If you see any of the following ingredients, don't purchase it!

Parabens- Linked to breast cancer and ovarian cysts, also linked to increased signs of aging.
Propylene Glycol (or other petrol chemicals)- Can cause skin reactions, eye irritation, and increased yeast infections
Alcohol- Frequently in warming and tingling lubricants. Can dry out vagina and anus causing discomfort, infections, or some skin damage from friction during sex
Glycerol (Glycerine, Glycerin)- A sugar derivative that can cause or feed yeast infections. Both synthetic and plant based can cause skin reactions with synthetic glycerol causing more intense reactions.

Don't be fooled by lubricants claiming to be organic or natural either. The only way to know for sure is to check the ingredient list. Lotus Blooms is proud to only sell lubricants without these chemicals. Be sure to check out our website for more in depth information on lubricants! We'll see you next time!
